Facing Sudden Unemployment

Facing unemployment. It’s quite likely to be one of your worst nightmares ever. Though the employment situation may be improving, some of us may still lose our jobs due to M&A activities or BPO (business processs outsourcing) or company realigning the business structure…
And when this nightmare does come true, what can you do to cope with it and how can you emerge from the experience unscathed? Read on to learn more.

• Being prepared – In any situation, being prepared is half the battle won. If you anticipate that you will most likely get laid off, then it’s a good idea to have a nest egg of financial resources that can tide you over the tough times. Even if getting laid off doesn’t seem like a possibility, think of it as something that is imminent and hence, start saving for it.
• No frills – There may have been plenty of things that you enjoyed when you were employed, but unemployment means that you will have to learn to let some luxuries go. Don’t wallow in self pity because the bad days won’t last forever. In fact, you might even learn to live without these extraneous perks.
• Look around – Maybe getting laid off was the best thing that could have happened to you. Particularly if you were getting into a rut at your present job. So, start looking around for possible jobs that you can do, and it’s a good time to even contemplate a career change.
• Develop skills – This is the best time to focus on developing your skills. This is because not only will you enter a new job feeling more qualified, you will also feel energetic, enthusiastic and self pity won’t be able to find its way towards you.
• Eligibility – Find out whether you’re eligible for unemployment benefits and work your way towards it, if your country supports unemployed people.
• Keep it together – Don’t go to pieces because you lost your job. This is the time to hold on to your courage and believe in yourself. Don’t feel disheartened and start looking for another job pronto.
• Take a break – This might even be the right time to take a short break from work and work related hassles. The right kind of break can rejuvenate your mind and give you a fresh perspective about what you want from life.
• Introspect – Being jobless means that you have plenty of time to think. This is the time you can actually decide what you want to do in your life and whether you have been doing it or not.
• Get help – Some people tend to get a bit depressed and start having extreme thoughts. At such a point, make sure that you get professional help which will help you sort out the mess in your head.

No one wants to become unemployed but it’s a choice we cannot make. However, we can be prepared for the next round, come what may.
