Does an MBA really help your career?

Pursuing an MBA Degree – Views of Advocates and Adversaries

MBA or Masters in Business Administration is an extension of one’s professional qualification to a higher level. Despite being a highly acclaimed way to enhance one’s skills, an MBA degree is frowned upon by several critics. There are experts who consider it as an unnecessary execution which involves the consumption of resources.

Here is a discussion as to whether an MBA is helpful in one’s career or not:

Advantages of MBA

Specialization: MBA can be pursued in a number of different fields including finance, marketing, operations, and human resources. By opting for a Master’s degree in any of these fields, one can earn a specialization in that field. This further makes it easier to put one’s career in a definite direction.

Enhancement of Skills: MBA provides the opportunities to graduates to enhance their skills and move on to an upper level. For instance, a graduate in the field of commerce can enhance his or her knowledge and skills in the same field by opting for an MBA degree in finance.

Better Job Opportunities: For a particular job position, an MBA degree holder obviously has better chances of getting hired than a graduate. A Master’s degree in a specific business field can help in seeking job opportunities with renowned business houses.

Better Income: It is common knowledge that as one climbs the ladder in terms of qualifications, the pay scale too rises correspondingly. Companies are obviously willing to pay more to a professional with higher qualifications.

Growth in Career: A graduation degree may bind one to a particular position in a company. If an MBA degree gets added to the qualifications, the same person becomes eligible for higher positions in the same company.

Besides, there are other advantages like the expansion of a professional network with other highly qualified people around the world and the sense of satisfaction associated with attaining higher qualifications than others. A better understanding of business responsibilities are inducted in an MBA professional, and with experience, he or she may think about having a business in the future.

What Adversaries Think

Many industry experts and faculties at reputed institutes are of the view that an MBA can only be pursued for the sake of better job opportunities. However, there are other growth opportunities that don’t essentially require one to be an MBA. Some of them are of the view that it is a generalized degree and is not applicable to the fields where pure engineering and other types of talents are required.

Moreover, MBA is an expensive course and requires an additional period of 1-2 years before the onset of one’s career. An MBA pursued from reputed institutes does help, but those pursuing it through not-so-known institutes are not able to extract much from the degree. Going further, many experts of the view that the practical knowledge required to handle business responsibilities can’t be learnt at business schools.

It is a good idea to have the consultation from an expert education counselor who can evaluate the requirement of doing an MBA. The present demand of MBAs in the job market can’t be overlooked, though you need a complete assessment before joining the race.

    Jenny,

Your views are respected but I noticed that your views are exttremely narrow-minded. And do you happen to have a list of testimonies from your clients who can vouch for you? I do not see any good references made to your practices on your website and from your blog, I have my doubts about the professionalism of your practice. Furthermore, the only comments I have seen on your blogs are all positive ones which is simply impossible. I’d suggest that perhaps you can let some constructive criticism be published as well, that is to say if you have actually deleted them all.
